About the Project
Alcon is one of the world's largest manufacturers of medical devices and vision care products. The Custom Pak Configurator is an internal B2B application used by sales teams globally to configure surgical packs and manage orders across multiple regions and product lines.
The Challenge
Create and support a new version of the internal B2B application to optimize global sales processes. Deliver a complete redesign combined with incremental bug fixing and ongoing competitor monitoring.
My Role
Senior / Lead Designer covering the full product lifecycle — from research and discovery through design, prototyping, testing, and iterative improvement. Responsible for maintaining design quality across the cross-platform application.
Process
SCRUM Framework & Research Discovery
Worked within a SCRUM framework with two-week sprints. Conducted research and discovery phases including stakeholder interviews, sales team observation sessions, and analysis of existing workflows to understand pain points in the surgical pack configuration process.
Ideation & Concept Development
Facilitated ideation workshops with stakeholders to generate and validate design concepts. Developed multiple concept directions and evaluated them against business requirements, technical feasibility, and user needs.
Design & Prototyping
Created high-fidelity designs and interactive prototypes for the cross-platform application, ensuring consistency across web and mobile experiences. Built an extensive design library with components tailored for medical device configuration workflows.
User Testing & Feedback
Conducted multiple rounds of user testing including A/B testing and Treejack testing for information architecture validation. Gathered quantitative and qualitative feedback from sales representatives across different regions to validate design decisions.
Results
Delivered an optimized cross-platform application that significantly improved key UX metrics: Task Success Rate, Time-on-Task, and System Usability Scale (SUS) scores all showed measurable improvement over the previous version.
Key Learnings
Learned the difference between a lancet and a taperkat needle — deep domain immersion into surgical equipment. Gained comprehensive experience in the full product design cycle, explored Unity 3D in web for 3D product visualization, built an extensive design library, and significantly improved information architecture optimization skills.
